The Black Angels – Science Killer

Another song from the trippy-as-hell Black Angels; this bassline is almost hypnotizing, and, under the right set of circumstances, I’m pretty sure it could achieve that effect on someone. The song consists of primarily a groovy bassline and some unobtrusive vocals sung in a uniquely legarthic sounding voice. I actually don’t know what the lyrics say, but the sound they make in conjunction with the beforementioned hypnotizing bassline really make a good combination. This is one of those songs that enables you to ‘just let go’ and enjoy the music and forget about any other worrisome thoughts you may have.

The Flashbulb – My Cold Blue Father

This somewhat weird song is from their album Girls.Suck.But.YOU.Don't and is a brain cruncher of note. Benn Jordan is an idm musician operating under many pseudonyms. Since 1999 his most widely distributed and eclectic music has been released under the name of The Flashbulb, whose songs mostly fall under theidm/breakcore genre. This is pretty much the only song I like out of all his music, but, that’s okay – this one good song makes up for all his other, numerous, not-so-good ones. And I’m not sure if it’s just my version, or every version, that has this weird screaming at the end of like 20 seconds of silence – or maybe I’m just going situationally insane. I will find out for sure when I look for a YouTube link.

The Black Angels – Phosphene Dream

I don’t think I would be writing this post and listenin’ to this song if I hadn’t started this blog – at least, I wouldn’t be listening to it right now at this time, having this moment. But I’m glad I did – because I had forgotten how cool this song was. The Black Angels are a psychedelic rock band from Austin, Texas, formed in May 2004. Their name derives from the Velvet Underground song “The Black Angel’s Death Song”. So one great band was the influence of another great band – I like how this works. The band consists of Alex Maas (vocals, guitar), Christian Bland (guitar), Kyle Hunt (keyboards), Nate Ryan (bass) and Stephanie Bailey (drums). This plays very trippy, psychedelic music, with a lot of their lyrics being narcotic related, which is relatable. ‘My eyes are red. I feel like laughing.’

Black Lips – Trapped in a Basement

The Black Lips are a self-described “flower punk” band which formed in Atlanta, Georgia, United States in 2000. While the title of the song could easily be the title of my life story, I’d much rather listen to the song than read my autobiography. This band is also different from many of the other bands I post about, because this band is somewhat ‘new’ – at least in comparison to stuff like The Doors and Pink Floyd. While still teenagers, they formed after guitarist Cole Alexander and bassist Jared Swilley left the Renegades, and guitarist Ben Eberbaugh left the Reruns. Drummer Joe Bradley joined a few months later. They released their first 7” in late 2001/early 2002 on their own Die Slaughterhaus label. Just days before a tour was to begin in December 2002, Ben Eberbaugh was killed in a car accident after his car was hit by a drunk driver. The band carried on believing that Eberbaugh would want them to continue. And the money was good, too.

Lyrics

Trapped in a basement, and there's no way out
I'm my papa's favorite, without a doubt
I haven't seen the sun, for 24 years
But now, my time is here

I'm daddy's favorite girl (it's over now)

I'm daddy's favorite girl (it's over now)
I'm daddy's favorite girl (it's over now)
I'm daddy's favorite girl (it's over now)

Trapped in the basement, and my food is running out

He doesn't listen, he's all about
He's on vacation, sucking up the sun
I know one day, I will be done

I'm daddy's favorite girl (it's over now)

I'm daddy's favorite girl (it's over now)
I'm daddy's favorite girl (it's over now)
I'm daddy's favorite girl (it's over now)

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Little Red Rooster

I’ve been listening to The Jesus and Mary Chain for some time now and, for some reason, I’ve never really noticed this song – actually, it was probably because I just listen to my ‘most played’ songs from each bands. Yes, I know it’s bad and that in doing that I miss out on songs just like this one, but… stop judging me, okay?  Anyway, leaving my persecution complex at that sentence and going back to the song, I’d say that this is way more ‘grunge-like’ and ‘garage-rock’ than most of their other songs and is probably due to a different line up than usual. Regardless of who made it, what genre it falls into, and whether it’s different to their other songs, it’s definitely worth listenin’ to a few times in a row.

Talking Heads – Psycho Killer

“Psycho Killer” is a song by Talking Heads from their 1977 album Talking Heads: 77, written by David Byrne, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth. The band’s “signature debut hit” features lyrics which seem to represent the thoughts of a serial killer, which, in my opinion, is very cool. This is my favourite Talking Heads song; I’d even be so bold as to put it in my top ten best songs of all time. Yes, I do think it is that good.

Talking Heads were a new wave band which formed in 1974 in New York City, New York, United States. The band originally consisted of David Byrne (vocals, guitar), Tina Weymouth (bass) and Chris Frantz (drums), who had met while attending the Rhode Island School of Design. The band added Jerry Harrison (guitar) in early 1977. The band released eight studio albums before disbanding in 1991.

Lyrics

I can't seem to face up to the facts
I'm tense and nervous and I
Can't relax
I can't sleep 'cause my bed's on fire
Don't touch me I'm a real live wire

Psycho Killer

Qu'est-ce que c'est
fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far better
Run run run run run run run away
Psycho Killer
Qu'est-ce que c'est
fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far better
Run run run run run run run away

You start a conversation you can't even finish it.

You're talkin' a lot, but you're not sayin' anything.
When I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed.
Say something once, why say it again?

Psycho Killer,

Qu'est-ce que c'est
fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far better
Run run run run run run run away
Psycho Killer
Qu'est-ce que c'est
fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far better
Run run run run run run run away

Ce que j'ai fais, ce soir la

Ce qu'elle a dit, ce soir la
Realisant mon espoir
Je me lance, vers la gloire ... OK
We are vain and we are blind
I hate people when they're not polite

Psycho Killer,

Qu'est-ce que c'est
fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far better
Run run run run run run run away
Psycho Killer,
Qu'est-ce que c'est
fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far better
Run run run run run run run away
oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh....

Pink Floyd – Careful With That Axe, Eugene

This song from the mighty and awesomely awesome Pink Floyd comes from one of their lesser known albums, which is part of why I like it so much, though not so much so that it would be the only reason for me listening to it – my shallowness only goes so far – that album  being Ummagumma. For many years this song lay hidden from me, shrouded in its cloack of obscurity – but, I found it – and I’m glad that I did. Apart from the amazing instrumentals, which is pretty much a certainty with the Floyd, the almost psychotic screaming in this song – which I think is meant to be the screaming of a person getting chopped up with an axe -- Eugene’s Axe – makes this song extremely trippy.

DarkShire vs Detonator - Jetgum

I don’t know too much about these artists, as I just found this song randomly while surfin’ on the world wide web, but this water-dripping, mind-blowing song almost guarantees itself on my not so prestigious blog. It combines the normal darkpsy sounds with that of different watery sounds; like water dripping and water flowing and… whatever, just listen to the song ;> It’s not so fast and bass-filled that you can’t listen to when you want to relax, but it’s not so chilled that you couldn’t listen to as a pre-party song either.

The Doors – The End

I’m pretty sure most people know this song, or if they don’t know the name, they will recognise it when it’s being played. “The End” is a song by The Doors. Originally a song Jim Morrison wrote about breaking up with a long time girlfriend; but, in my opinion, this songs can mean something different each time you play it – the end of a relationship, the end of certain period in ones’ life, or pretty much anything else as well, since we’re faced with endings every day of our lives. The lyrics also follow the story of Oedipus Rex; for those not too familiar with the Greek myth or Freudian psychology, it’s about a boy who, essentially, kills his father and has sex with his mother. While this is probably disturbing to some people, I find it cool that it’s the base line of their lyrics for this song. Not implying that I have an unresolved Oedipus complex.

 Lryics

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes...again

Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land

Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah

There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby

Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold

The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest

The blue bus is callin' us
The blue bus is callin' us
Driver, where you taken' us

The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door...and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...I want to...fuck you

C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
On a blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
C'mon, yeah

Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die

This is the end

A-Team – Shahidshare

No, this isn’t the theme song for the A-Team, this is a full-on, psytrance experience whiLch, after a brief period of thinking it over, I shall include on this site as reviews for the psychedelic lifestyle of music; as, in my opinion, psychedelic equates to trippy and all that associates itself with that term – and this song is nothing if not trippy; it’s from their album ‘145 Street’.

A-Team is a project by Yonatan Marcow (artist name Bliss and Roy Engel (artist name Painkiller).
The two collaborated one millennium ago under the name ‘Shaff-Puff’ and later on created their individual projects. After successful touring and music producing each on his own, the two decided to join forces again. Their debut album ‘A-Team - Fast Forward ’ was released in spring 2008 on the Spanish based record label - Nutek.

The Stevenson Ranch Davidians - No Tomorrow

While this isn’t what one might normally expect from something categorised under the ‘psychedelic’ genre, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve to be there. I’ve only listened to one of their albums, that being ‘Life & Death’ and I enjoyed pretty much every song on there – which is an extremely rare thing to happen to me; not saying that I have an excessively picky taste in music (thought I do) but most album releases these days seem to have the bare minimum number of ‘good’ns’, if they have any at all. But that’s what this site is meant to be for, right? For me to go through the mostly painful process of finding good music, and for you to listen to it – if you choose to.

Syd Barrett – Baby Lemonade

This song has one of the best solo-guitar introductions that I’ve ever heard – and I’ve heard a lot of them. Now while I’m not saying that you will necessarily agree with me, as we are all entitled to our own subjective opinions – I’m right about this, and if you don’t think so, you’re wrong. But in all seriousness, and seriousness is the most essential ingredient to writing a successful mini-review of songs, this is definitely a song to try out, especially if you’re fond of the Floyd – seeing as Barrett was once a member of their band.

However, he went crazy, and they kicked him out – but then later dedicated the song ‘Shine on you Crazy Diamond’ to him – which was nice, in my opinion. His solo albums, Barret (in which this song comes from) and The Madcap Laughs, were recorded just before his insanity worsened and he became a complete recluse. The fact that he wrote these during flucutatings bouts of insanity was one of my main reasons to listening to them.

In the sad town
cold iron hands clap
the party of clowns outside
rain falls in gray far away
please, please, Baby Lemonade

In the evening sun going down
when the earth streams in, in the morning
send a cage through the post
make your name like a ghost
please, please, Baby Lemonade

I'm screaming, I met you this way
you're nice to me like ice
in the clock they sent through a washing machine
come around, make it soon, so alone...
please, please, Baby Lemonade

In the sad town
cold iron hands clap
the party of clowns outside
rain falls in gray far away
please, please, Baby Lemonade

In the evening sun going down
when the earth streams in, in the morning
send a cage through the post
make your name like a ghost

Spacemen 3 - Honey

Spacemen 3 are another band that pioneered the way forward for Psychedelic music. Although the band itself has been through a lot of internal troubles, their music is, and will probably always be, amazing. This is also one of the main bands - and particularly this song - which brought me around to the side of psychedelic rock music. Their music, especially this song, is smooth, awesome and depending on the state of mind you're in, extremely trippy.

Honey, won’t you take me home tonight?
Honey, won’t you take me home tonight?
Honey, won’t you take me home tonight?
The night is warm and the starts are bright

Take my hand, baby, hold me tight
Every move gonna feel so right

See the moon smiling through the night
I feel so good and my mood is right
Oh, honey, won’t you take me home tonight?

Honey, won’t you take me home tonight?
Feels so right
Feels so right
Honey, won’t you take me home tonight?
Feels so right
Feels so right

Listen to the wind whistling through
Surely ain’t nothin’ that we can’t do
Surely ain’t nothin’ that we can’t do

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Wisdom

This was one of the first 'psychedelic' songs I had heard, and it had a big influence over me getting 'into' thn genre. The Brian Jonestown Massacre, in my opinion, is one of the main and best bands of the genre. They combine intelligent lyrics with amazing instrumentals and outstanding vocals - definitely a 'must' for any music lover out there, even if this genre isn't one of your favourites. But be warned: you may just come to find all other music pales in comparison to them once you've started listening to them properly.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre was formed in San Francisco in 1990. The band has had over 40 members since then (which I like, because it brings a lot of variety and diversity to their music - not just the same stuff over and over again - keepin' it fresh), but its driving force and main songwriter is Anton Newcombe. Other prominent members have includedi Matt Hollywood, Dean Taylor, Jeff Davies, Brian Glaze, and Joel Gion. Their sound is heavily influenced by the psychedelic sounds of the 1960s, but also carries influences from shoegaze, jangle pop, garage rock, and lo-fi sonorities.

Over its decade-long history, the band has undergone a large number of personnel changes. Multi-instrumentalist and main songwriter Anton Newcombe is the only member who has stayed with the Brian Jonestown Massacre since its beginning, when it was founded by Newcombe, tambourine player Joel Gion (who stayed with him the longest), and guitarist/bassist/vocalist Matt Hollywood. There are at least two dozen musicians who have been in the BJM at one point or another.

if i thought i knew the reason
why i've gone and fallen
in love with you
you're the one thing i believe in
and i know quite well
what i've got to do
first you say it's ok
then you say there's no way
then i'm making love to you!
you're the one thing i believe in
and know it's time cause i've
got to tell you

my love

is
like a flower
daisies
are
always free.
pulling out
the petals
i
wonder,
if you
love me?
love.
love me,
love me!

if i thought i knew the reason

why i've gone and fallen
in love with you
you're the one thing i believe in
and i know it's time because i've
got to tell you
first you say it's ok
then you say there's no way
then i'm making love to you!
you're the one thing i believe in
and
i'll get my way
or
i'm going to kill you

The Asteroid #4 - My Love

The Asteroid #4 is a psychedelic pop band that drew as much on British ’60s songwriting as Eastern music - which I think is really cool and original, especially in todays world of 'all must be from the West' and it definitely shows in their music. As the band matured, it moved toward a sound that plays up a psychedelic rock style as well as 60s pop— somewhat similar to experimental guitar pop/power pop. This makes their music, in my opinion, really unique -- awesomely unique.

Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit

This is also another one of those 'replay until dead' songs - I'd say this song is pretty timeless, and definitely one of my favourite, if not favourite, songs from the Jefferson Airplane. I think it's the ending of this song that just makes one want to keep playing it; you just want more of it.

"White Rabbit" was written by Grace Slick, who based the lyrics on Lewis Carroll’s book Alice In Wonderland. Like many young musicians in San Francisco, Slick did a lot of drugs. She saw lots of drug references in Carroll’s book, including the pills, the smoking caterpillar, the mushroom, and lots of other images that are generally trippy. She noticed that lots of childrens stories involve a substance of some kind that alters reality, and felt it was time to write a song about it.

Slick got the idea for this after taking LSD and spending hours listening to the Miles Davis album Sketches Of Spain.

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you
Don’t do anything at all.
Go ask Alice
When she’s ten feet tall.

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you’re going to fall,
Tell ‘em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call.
Call Alice
When she was just small.

When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you’ve just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low.
Go ask Alice
I think she’ll know.

When logic and proportion
Have fallen softly dead,
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen’s “off with her head!”
Remember what the dormouse said:
“Feed your head. Feed your head. Feed your head”

The Blue Angel Lounge - I Will Never

The Blue Angel Lounge must be one of my most favourite purely psychedelic bands; their music is so chilled, yet so awesomely trippy - it just makes one want to close their eyes and imagine themselves being transported through space in some type of nebula star formation. At least, that's what happens to me when I listen to this song. And I unfortunately could not find the lyrics for this song, though there are a lot of vocals in this song - I'm sure you'll be able to make them our pretty clearly though in the song.

Do Make Say Think - Disco & Haze

While this isn't exactly in the category of 'psychedelic rock' and is grouped under the 'post-rock' genre, to me, it is extremely psychedelic and this is why i'm doing a post on it. There aren't any vocals, but the instrumentals used in this song more than make up for it.

The Dandy Warhols - The Wreck

You know those songs which you hear once, and can't stop listening to them until you've pretty much killed them by overplaying them? This is one of those songs.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called 'Gitche Gumee'.
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead,
When the skies of November are gloomy.
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty,
The good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early.
The ship was the pride of the American side,
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin.
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
Which they left fully loaded for Cleveland.
And later that night when the ships bell rang
Could it be the North Wind they'd been feeling.
At seven P.M., the old cook came on deck sayin'
'Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya'.
When the captain wired in he had water comin' in,
He said 'Fellas, it's been good t'know ya'
Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion.
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams;
The islands and bays are for sportsmen.
And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Erie can send her,
But the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the Gales of November remembered.

The Velvet Underground - Venus in Furs

As my first ever post on this blog, I'll be posting about one of my favourite songs at the moment, and probably one of the best I've ever heard. Also, because this is the first post on this wonderfully marvelous and trippy band, I'll be doing a bit of a 'background info' type of thing on them.

The Velvet Underground was a pioneering experimental rock band from New York City first active from 1965 to 1973. Its best-known lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist Lou Reed, bassist/violist John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker. The band also collaborated with Nico for their debut album in 1967, under the supervision of producer and pop artist Andy Warhol.

Some see The Velvet Underground as being a bridge between the pacifist themes of the late 60s and the sheer chaos and indifference of the mid-70s punk movement.

The Velvet Underground was one of the first rock music groups to experiment heavily with the form by incorporating avant-garde influences. The group’s often raw, sometimes difficult sound would influence many later punk, noise rock, and alternative music performers, and singer Lou Reed’s lyrics brought new levels of social realism and sleaze to rock. Critics Scott Isler and Ira Robbins argue that “The Velvet Underground marked a turning point in rock history. After the release of The Velvet Underground & Nico knowing the power of which it was capable, the music could never be as innocent, as unselfconscious as before.”

And here is what you've all been waiting for: the song itself.

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
 Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Comes in bells, your servant, don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

 Downy sins of streetlight fancies
Chase the costumes she shall wear
 Ermine furs adorn the imperious
 Severin, Severin awaits you there

I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
 Different colors made of tears

Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather
 Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue of thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

 Severin, Severin, speak so slightly
Severin, down on your bended knee
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly
Taste the whip, now plead for me

I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
 Different colors made of tears

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
 Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Severin, your servant comes in bells, please don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart
